At UnderDog NZ we have a mixed kennel of Alaskan Malamutes. Alaskan Huskies and Siberian Huskies. The majority of our dogs are Alaskan Huskies which have come to New Zealand from our race team in Alaska.  Our love is not for a specific breed, but more so Northern breed dogs in general.

The Alaskan Malamute – “One of the oldest Arctic sled dogs”

The Alaskan Malamutes were our first passion for Sled Dogs and we will never be without one.  They are truly a magnificent breed and a true reward to work and live with.  The Malamutes are a breed born with a strong sense of survival and their natural instincts are very much preserved.  As a result, the Malamute makes an exceptional working dog, but can require some motivation to work to its full potential.  We tend to run mixed Alaskan Malamute and Alaskan Husky teams which brings the best out of the Malamutes.

The Malamutes are only included within basket ride options.  We do not provide Malamutes for drive your own team options.  These are strong willed dogs.

The Alaskan Husky – “Bred for stamina, strength, speed and endurance”

Having started with Alaskan Malamutes it is hard for many other breeds to instantly strike you with their appearance and presence.  Especially when you consider a breed like the Alaskan Husky, which have no distinctive standard or appearance.  The only defining standard of an Alaskan Husky is it’s purpose, which is that of a highly efficient sled dog.  Most people expect the more Alaskan Malamute / Siberian Husky to be the sled dogs, and they make great sled dogs.  However the Alaskan Husky is the dog of choice in North America, coming from a primitive line of dogs that started in the arctic villages and have been refined over the years.  It’s hard not to be amazed by their mental and physical stamina.  A majority of our Alaskans have considerable race experience across North America in races ranging from 60 – 1000 miles (100 – 1600 km).  It’s a privilege to be in the presence of theses animals and more so to experience the power of them in or behind the sled.

The Siberian Husky – “An active, energetic and resilient breed”

The Siberians have been brought in solely for the tours to expose guests to a range of Northern breed dogs.  In the short time that we have worked with them we have grown to admire and love them as an honest hard working sled dog.  Our Siberians have come from the Kennel of Ray and Dianne Holiday who has raised and raced sled dogs in New Zealand for numerous years having one of the more competitive Siberian race teams in the country.  Originally their lines where imported to Australia from Minnesota, USA.
